The challenge

Biological treatment depends on microorganisms to break down the organic load in wastewater. High organic loads, fats, oils and grease (FOG), cold temperatures and sudden changes in flow or composition can slow that biological activity. The results are familiar to every operator: sludge buildup, odors, grease blockages and longer recovery after process upsets.

How Bacillus supports treatment

Organic load reduction

Bacillus produce enzymes that break down proteins, carbohydrates and fats, supporting biological degradation of organic matter and the reduction of BOD and COD.

Fats, oils and grease

Lipase-producing strains help degrade FOG in grease traps, lift stations and collection lines.

Sludge management

Support the breakdown of biodegradable organic solids, helping control sludge accumulation.

Odor control

By supporting the breakdown of organic waste, Bacillus help manage conditions associated with unpleasant odors, including hydrogen sulfide formation.

Bioaugmentation

Supplements the existing microbial population, supporting system start-up and recovery after upsets.

Applications

  • Municipal treatment plants, including activated sludge systems and lagoons
  • Food and beverage processing wastewater
  • Agricultural and livestock lagoons
  • Industrial effluent with biodegradable organic load
  • Grease traps, lift stations and collection systems
  • Septic systems
Good practice

Best results with sound operation

Bacillus products complement, not replace, good plant operation. Aerobic processes need adequate dissolved oxygen, and biological activity depends on pH and temperature staying within normal ranges. Avoid dosing immediately after biocide or chlorine use. Dosage depends on flow, organic load and system type, and is detailed in each product's usage guide.
